Every fall, the population of monarch butterflies that lives east of the Rockies begins an annual pilgrimage to the high altitude boreal forests located in a small segment of Mexico’s transvolcanic range. Most popular accounts claim that the butterflies “go to Michoacán.” In fact, just as many choose roosting sites across the border in the adjacent State of Mexico. The Cerro Pelón Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary includes parts of both states, and our forest arborists hail from communities on both sides of this political divide.
